Don Carney, Director of the Marin Youth Court, will bring a presentation on the Youth Court's history, processes, and successes.  More than half a dozen League members attended a Youth Court session on July 13 and will share their experience.  

We learned, for example, that a majority of the cases heard in Youth Court are related to substance abuse (e.g., marijuana).  We also learned that the intended result of a youth court case is restorative justice, which has been an interest of our Justice Committee for some time.

The Health Committee, from another perspective, is interested in the County's response to drug, alcohol and marijuana use by young people.  In that vein, the League has been invited to join Marin County Health Department's Marin Prevention Network, a coalition of local organizations working to address alcohol and substance abuse issues in the County. This network's two immediate initiatives involve local Social Host Ordinances and alcohol consumption at youth sports events.
