LWVC does not have a position on public higher education in California that includes the CSU and UC systems, the League cannot comment on or advocate for or against any legislation. This study was proposed and approved in order to remedy this situation and in recognition of the fact that education is the bedrock upon which democracy is built and sustained.
Our League’s consensus will combine with that of other Leagues in California to form the basis of a new position on Public Higher Education in California.
Leagues' positions become the foundation for our advocacy. Bring a brown bag lunch if you like; beverages will be available.
These are the topics we will discuss:
- What is the purpose of California’s system of public higher education?
- Equitable Access: Should everyone, regardless of preparation for college, have access to higher education?
- Funding & Affordability: Should tuition for public higher education be free?
- Preparedness: How well are K-12 students prepared for higher education?
- Opportunities/Barriers to Success: Limited capacity and strict adherence to the 1960 eligibility requirements for four-year colleges have contributed to California’s low baccalaureate attainment.
