On March 7, 1965, John Lewis, Hosea Williams, and 600 civil rights marchers were beaten and gassed by Alabama state and local police as they crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge on their way from Selma to Montgomery to insist on their constitutional right to vote. “Bloody Sunday” ignited the conscience of the nation and led to passage of the Voting Rights Act five months later.
Join us next week, on March 9, at 7pm, for an in-depth discussion on “Bloody Sunday,” the Voting Rights Act, the rise of new forms of voter suppression, and how passing voting rights legislation in 2021 is an urgent matter of racial justice and strengthening our democracy.
