Jose Varela is the recently retired Public Defender of Marin County. He arrived in Marin County in 2001 when he was appointed to be the Assistant Public Defender. Jose has been a public defender for over 33 years and in that time he also worked in Los Angeles and San Diego counties. As a trial attorney, Jose tried cases ranging from misdemeanors to death penalty cases. He is a past president of the California Public Defender Association. Currently, Jose is part of the California Supreme Court's work on jury selection. In retirement Jose is enjoying writing poetry and short stories. You can follow his work at josevarelapoetry.com
